Chelsea vs Cardiff City: FA cup, pics

We came. We saw. We outsang the home fans. We put up a bit of a decent fight but were finally overwhelmed.

Here?s some pics from Cardiff?s away trip to the Premiership toffs at Chelsea:

Note the pleasing lack of sitting down going on. How can you sit down for a football match?

Modern football is rubbish

[Rant]

So, I fancy taking my girlfriend to see a game at Cardiff.

Until recently this meant having a few pints at the pub and then turning up at the match and paying on the turnstile and the walking on the terrace to find my friends. Simple.

Here's how modern football does it.

1 Go through the palaver of registering as a fan on the hideous website
2 Pay ?4 to become a 'fan' capable of buying a ticket (?20 if I want to go to an away game)
3 Register my girlfriend as a fan (this involves logging off and starting over)
4 Log back in
5 Pay ?4 on my girlfriend's behalf so I can buy her a ticket
6 Battle with hideous booking system in an attempt to buy tickets remotely close to my friends
7 Fail miserably
8 Ring up and buy tickets
9 End up miles from my mates at the game

If I was physically capable of supporting a team in Division 4 or below I would, but Cardiff's in my DNA (hence they can get away with charging me just to have the right to buy a ticket).

Modern football is rubbish.

Coping with failure: Cardiff City FC

In a remarkable run of ultra-crapness, my beloved Cardiff City FC - who recently looked destined for a guaranteed play-off place (if not automatic promotion) - conspired to turn into a wobbly bag'o'cack, collecting just one measly point from a possible 12.

Today, all they had to do was draw to Sheffield Wednesday - a team languishing miles below us in the league, but even that proved too much, so it's another season in the Championship for us (or the 'Second Division' as it should rightfully be called).

Naturally, I'm horribly disappointed by this rubbish end to our season, but my reaction seems a little more restrained that I anticipated.

A few years ago, this would have been my response:

Football: coping with faiilure - Doom and Despair Man

But now - perhaps because I'm older or perhaps because I'm not sure if the corporate-powered, prawn sandwich-propelled Premiership is to my tastes - I feel a lot more like this:

How do you cope with defeat? Check out the What kind of fan are you? section, or drop me a line...

Charlton Athletic 2 Cardiff City 2

Phew! This was a nail-biting game alright!

Even though Charlton were already relegated from the Championship and had nothing much to play for, Cardiff failed to match their high-flying league position and had to battle through a very tense 90 minutes, only managing a much needed point at the death.

Here's a few photos:

I really like Charlton's ground. It may be new(ish) but it's not another hideous metal box like the rest of them.

One minute to go and.. GOALLLLLL! Cardiff get the crucial equaliser, right at the end!

Crystal Palace 0 Cardiff City 2

We went down to Selhurst Park yesterday to see the mighty Cardiff City take on Crystal Palace.

The game wasn't short on thrills or incident and turned out to be a very physical encounter and a great spectacle to watch. Best of all, the win put the Bluebirds into fourth place so we're still looking good for the play offs (at the very least!).

What is this banner about?

Roger Johnson has just been elbowed in the neck by Davis. How could the ref have not seen it?

Love the old school wooden seats!

This is what full time after a 4-0 defeat looks like.

Cardiff fans aren't angels, but we certainly know how to party!

Here's the view from the terraces after we were thumped 4-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

As the final whistle blew, the Cardiff end erupted to a chorus of  "Let's all have a disco!".

Cardiff City: View from the Bob Bank

I've stood on these terraces man and boy, but with a soon-come move across the road to a shiny, corporate friendly box, I thought I'd grab a few photos of the Bob Bank at Cardiff City FC.

I was there to see  the mighty Cardiff City crush Plymouth Argyle 1-0, on an icy cold late December afternoon. I loved it!

Swansea Youth - comedy gold!

I know I should feel a little guilty for laughing at my fellow Welshmen, but when they're as stupid as this lot of failed football hoolies, I feel it's my duty to share it with you all.   :)

Cardiff City 0 Bristol City 0 - photos

On Saturday we popped down to Ninian Park for what will probably be our last cross-Severn derby with Bristol City - next season we should have moved across Sloper Road and settled in our shiny new stadium.

I'm going to miss the old Ninian Park though - in particular, I'm going to really miss standing on the terracing, which as far as I'm concerned is how football should always be watched.

Such is progress, this will be the last season that I'll be allowed to stand on the terraces. And that's rubbish.

Brighton "Fans United" remembered, 1997

Back in 1997, Brighton & Hove Albion were deep in financial trouble, courtesy of dodgy directors and iffy land deals, and with the prospect of the club going under for good, a "Fans United" day was organised.

This involved inviting fans from other teams to come down to show solidarity with the club's plight at their home game against fellow strugglers Hartlepool United.

Thousands of fans turned up with their colours, and it was a great day out - with the Brighton players responding to the terrace love by thumping Hartlepool 5-0.

Sadly, Brighton's problems have now become almost everyday for many clubs as big money continues to infest the game I love.

Here's a photo as we made our way to the game in proper football weather.

FA Cup Final - some pics

Some photos from yesterday's game. We may not have won but the boys did us proud on the pitch, the atmosphere was great and the City fans sang their hearts out.

And who would've thought that we'd ever make it to the Cup Final anyway?!

The game was a whole load more fun than our recent Wembley semi final clash with Barnsley and it was a great way to end the season.

Who would have thought that Cardiff would end up in the FA Cup Final, but we'll be there on May 17th!! (Well, I say "we" but it looks like I haven't got a hope in hell of getting a ticket).

Brixton: Rock'n'Roll, Fire and Snow

Offline

Offline

There was an almighty night at the Albert on Friday with two top bands - the DeBretts and I Wanna Be Sedated, a UK film premiere of the Last Days Of CBGBs and a stand up set from Vic Lambrusco. And it was my birthday party too!

Check out the mosh pit action!

Brixton fire

Brixton fire

We woke up to find a huge fire going on Brixton Road which resulted in some of our friends nearby being evacuated and the tube being closed.

Offline

Last night I was doing the sound and DJing at the Albert, with the excellent Petunia playing a live set. The (very mixed) crowd were a very lively bunch so me and Nipsla had to work hard on the decks to keep 'em entertained (and I got away with playing the mighty Welsh rockers Budgie again!)!

Brixton snow

Best of all, woke up this morning to find Brixton covered in a layer of snow. Lovely!

Right now, London protesters are doing themselves proud turning the Olympic torch procession into a total PR farce, and we're getting ready to head off to Wembley to see the mighty, mighty Cardiff City play Barnsley in the FA Cup semi final.

Come on you Blooooobirds!

FA Cup: Middlesbrough 0 Cardiff City 2

Oh yes indeedy! Thanks to two first half goals by Peter Whittingham and Roger Johnson, the mighty Bluebirds out-hustled, out-skilled and outplayed the Premiership team today.

You could almost hear the cash till register notching up every time the Caerphilly-born 17 year old whizzkid Aaron Ramsey got the ball, but this was a great, all-round team performance and a deserved win for City.

So we're on out way to Wembley for the semi final. I'll be there!
