Reminiscent of the some of the best old pubs in Brixton before gentrification struck, the Star & Garter is a wonderful community pub in the multi-cultural area of St Pauls in Bristol.
Famous for its late night reggae/ska parties, dub raves, friendly atmosphere and charismatic Jamaican landlord/Resident DJ “Dutty Ken,” the Star & Garter is rightly regarded as one of the best underground venues in Bristol.
The pub was where DJ Derek started his DJ career “by accident” when in his mid-30s, and was recently saved from closure after a crowdfunding campaign paid off outstanding debts.
We visited on a lively Saturday night and had a fantastic time. Inside things are a bit chaotic, but the ska and reggae sounds were fantastic and the vibes friendly and laid back. It really is a lovely place to spend a Saturday night.
There’s a pool table in the front room.
