Brixton’s Christmas lights are getting switched on this year from 4pm in Windrush Square, central Brixton.
There’ll also be a Brixton library Christmas card workshop, 4pm, followed by a young people’s light parade at 5pm and the launch of a new ‘twilight’ street market, the Brixton Sundowner, from 5pm to 8pm.
The market will run every Friday in December from 5 – 10pm on Windrush Square, Brixton.
The St Martins Elite choir will also be in attendance for the Christmas Lights ceremony, singing three songs for everyone.
An Edwardian Brixton Christmas
In Edwardian times, festive Brixtonites really went for the festive season in a mighty big way, as you can see in this 1908 view of Electric Avenue.
The street – once an upmarket shopping destination – is bedecked in a forest of Christmas trees with loads of dangly bits hanging from its now vanished canopies.

Dear editor the picture of an Edwardian Brixton Christmas 1908 electric avenue how wonderful it looks I only wish that we could produce the same for 2016 lets get the folk of Brixton to start collecting for a xmas it would draw lots of people I am sure
