Thirty years after the Brixton riot, The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton” anthem pre-dates the uprising (the song was released in 1979) but perfectly captures the growing mood of discontent and anger on the streets.
The Guns of Brixton was written and sung by south London bassist Paul Simonon (in the video he’s playing guitar as he didn’t like playing bass and singing at the same time).
On Sunday, 10th April 2011, there is an event in central Brixton marking the 30th anniversary. Find out more and see footage from the uprising here.
