Coimbra, Portugal: 100 photos of night scenes, street art, architecture and Christmas lights

Last weekend, I was in the beautiful historic riverfront city of Coimbra in central Portugal, and managed to grab these 100 photos as I wandered through the narrow cobbled streets of its medieval old town.

I was in town to play a show with The Monochrome Set at the Gil Vicente Academic Theater (TAGV) venue.

Our hotel (above) was clean and modern and had some great neon signage!

Christmas lights.

Hordes of panting runners were dashing through town, with the 42nd São Silvestre de Coimbra taking place.

Soundchecking at the cavernous venue.

My drum kit for the evening.

Walking through the old town, with decorations above the cobbled streets.

Walking through the Barbican fortifications.

We had a meal at Pátio da Inquisição. The people were very friendly and the beer tasty, but for vegans and veggies it’s a pretty grim experience full of unexpected ‘beefy surprises.

We stopped off for a nightcap at this tiny bar called Beco da Imprensa.

This was a rather curious beverage. Billed as a weissbier is tasted more like scrumpy. But it still went down the hatch well enough.

Deserted streets of Coimbra.

The Garden of Mango (Jardim da Manga) pavilion and fountain in the centre of Coimbra.

Loved this old blue building.

Looking across the Rio Mondego.

Boas Festas – happy holidays!

Impressive water feature on the Mondego River.

There’s some stunning architecture around Coimbra:

Along the winding alleys.

Street art.

Not the most appealing sign I’ve ever seen, but at least you have no problem working out what they sell.

Power lines and lamps.

Black stained building.

Old signs.

The hanging decorations were made from wine corks.

“Waiting For The Man….”

Coming down the hill.

The spirit of Wolfie Smith lives on in Coimbra.

Coimbra-A railway station.

The letterboxes look very familiar!

Disused building.
