Work is continuing apace on the new ice rink being erected on the corner of Brixton Station Road and Pope’s Road in central Brixton.
Situated next to the Brixton Recreation Centre, the 56m x 26m rink is set to open in January 2012, and for two and a half years will serve as the temporary home of Streatham’s ice skating and ice hockey teams while Tesco’s controversial Hub project is being built.
There was a long-running campaign of opposition from local traders to the ice rink, which was built on the site of a particularly ugly but rather useful multi-story car park.
Really old school Brixtonites will recall that the town once had its own Roller Rink too, which was situated on Effra Road, and served the community for over half a century.
