On the site of an ancient castle overlooking a south coast town, I witnessed a quintessentially English scene as the Queen of May was crowned in Hastings, East Sussex.
The ceremony forms part of the ‘Hastings Jack in the Green’ celebrations, which sees the town taken over by Morris Dancers, musicians, performers, drummers and legions of real ale drinkers.
The crowning of the Queen of May takes place in the ruins of Hastings Castle.
