Tens of thousands of protesters filled the streets of central London today to protest against the government’s austerity measures.
The organisers said:
With the Tories going it alone in government we know exactly what to expect. More nasty, destructive cuts to the things ordinary people care about- the NHS, the welfare state, education and public services.
We’ll be assembling the demonstration in the heart of the City of London right on the doorstep of the very people who created the crisis in the first place, the banks and their friends in Westminster. We demand that the bankers and elite should pay for the crisis and not the vast majority who had nothing to do with it.
A estimated crowd of 250,000 people attended a rally outside the Bank of England before marching to the Houses of Parliament, where union leaders and celebrities including Russell Brand and Charlotte Church gave speeches.

I loved this bit: “One aspect of this that really gets under my skin is that it’s all wrapped up in a ‘proud to be British’ package. I’m proud to be British because of our National Health Service, the welfare system and David Bowie.”
She also added: “We need to win back… young minds and save ourselves from decades of yuppie rule, and the way we do that is with fresh ideas, positive messages, new theories, engaging art and more public figures sticking their heads above the parapet.”
