Away days don’t get much better than this.
By the end of the 1992-3 season, Cardiff had assured their promotion out of Division Three, with a win away at Scunthorpe guaranteeing we’d go up as champions.
A massive travelling Cardiff crowd of 7,000 fans had taken over most of the ground, with many following the custom for turning up for the last game of the season in fancy dress.
With the ground filled to capacity with hordes of big beefy guys squeezed into floral dresses waiting for the final whistle, several announcements came over the Tannoy warning us that we must stay off the pitch.
With the seconds ticking away and Cardiff winning 3-0, more and more ladyboys jostled for position on the railings, while a thin line of cops and stewards optimistically gestured that we should remain in the stands.
“Please do NOT go on the pitch” insisted the announcer firmly, “Stay in the stands after the final whistle.”
We’re the champions!
The full time whistle sounds and the tranny pitch invasion begins!
A hapless steward takes off in hot pursuit, while an amused, leather-gloved cop looks resigned to losing the battle, as the pitch fills up with celebrating Cardiff fans.
It was a great day out. Read the full report here.
