Hysteria & Disaster art show at Maison Bertaux, Soho, London

Hysteria and Disaster art show at Maison Bertaux, Soho, London, 12th March 2014

Last night, I went along to the private view for the Hysteria & Disaster art show in the splendid Maison Bertaux gallery/ patisserie in Greek Street, Soho.

The exhibition took place on two locations within the shop, with the all-girl collective HYSTERIA (Collagism, Aida Wilde and Shuby) showing their work in a particularly hot basement area, and Jeffrey Disaster exhibiting in the upstairs dining area.

The small gallery space was too packed to grab many photos of Hysteria’s arresting collage and screen-printwork, but I liked the brash, colourful, 80s-inspired iconography.

The building is wonderful, with oodles of original features.

Jeffrey Disaster’s paintings, montages and installations took over the top floor , stairwell and even the toilet.

Mixing original brush work with Victorian ephemera, sheet music, flowers and found objects, Disaster’s style is instantly recognisable

Al fresco diners enjoying the fare at London’s oldest (and quite possibly best) patisserie.
