I think I was perhaps spoiled by the wonderful Momentum installation at The Curve in the Barbican back in 2014, and set my expectations too high for Imran Qureshi’s new work, “Where the Shadows are so Deep.”
The award-winning Pakistani artist Qureshi was commissioned by the Barbican to create this new body of work for The Curve, and the installation will be showing until 10th July 2016.
Here’s how the Barbican described the work:
For his first major London commission, Qureshi presentsWhere the Shadows are so Deep, a series of exquisite miniature paintings, drawing upon The Curve as a motif in this tradition. Beginning with gentle scenes of nature, the sequence of works gradually introduces darker elements, subtly implying the uncertainty of what lies around the bend.
Hung at varying heights along the dramatic 90-metre span of the space, these delicate, jewel-like paintings lure the visitor in, demanding an altogether different kind of looking.
I’m afraid the installation didn’t work for me at all, but perhaps others will get more from it.
