Tucked away in a Shinjuku alley and up a flight of stairs is the wonderful Gravity rock bar, a diminutive venue which wedges in a fully stocked bar and a huge collection of guitars displayed on the walls.
Bathed in purple lights and complete with a tiny stage dominated by an electronic drum kit and keyboard, the bar is the creation of heavy metal fan and guitar obsessive Nobuyoshi Doi, who is a lovely bloke.
The bar became a regular haunt during our recent tour in Tokyo, and after a particularly late session, me and the keyboard player John attempted a very drunken jam session with Nobuyoshi.
Through the haze of Jagermeister shots, I can recall that he was a bloody amazing guitarist, although it’s fair to say my drumming style on the night was ‘erratic’ at best. I have a memory of John falling off his stool at one point too, so I guess neither of us were at our best – but it was a help of fun.
Here’s some more photos of the bar – I can highly recommend popping in if you’re ever in Tokyo.
