A dazzling new public space located on a new pier on New York’s Hudson River, Little Island is a must-see if you’re visiting New York.
Designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick with landscape design by Signe Nielsen of MNLA, the space contains more than 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs, a 687-seat amphitheatre and an intimate stage and lawn space.
Built on top of the piles, 132 concrete “tulips” make up the park’s distinctive structure, with the original Pier 54 piles providing habitat for aquatic life.
The plantings are varied to provide an environment that changes with the seasons, with flowering trees and shrubs, fall foliage and evergreens. More than 66,000 bulbs and 114 trees have been planted, some of which will grow to 60 feet tall.
The park also affords fantastic views across New York City and the Hudson River.
