I was saddened to hear that the legendary downtown New York art-supplies store, Pearl Paint, has closed down.

Trading amongst the bustle of Canal Street for fifty years, Pearl Paint first opened on Church Street in 1933, originally selling house paint.

Always a must-visit for me every time I visited New York, the store’s five floors contained just about every conceivable thing an artist might need, and the knowledgeable staff could always be relied on for good advice.

Their Facebook page remains active, and still, rather poignantly, bears the message:

About
Serving fine artists and artisans with the largest selection of art supplies in the entire world.
Mission
Our goal, as it has been from day one, is to provide artists with the world’s largest selection of fine art and craft supplies, at the lowest prices, with the best help in the world.

RIP Pearl Paints. You’ll be missed by this Brit the next time I’m in NYC.
