When we were in New York last month, we took the free ferry out of Manhattan to Staten Island and braved an icy walk to visit the Sailors’ Snug Harbor – an old institute for ‘aged, decrepit and worn-out sailors.’
The site – which was nearly flattened in the 60s – now serves as a Culture Centre, and is a fun place to visit. We had a fantastic meal in the cafe below.

We also took a walk around Staten Island, which has its pretty and its not-so-pretty parts.
