The Getty Gallery by Oxford Circus continues to be one of my favourite photography galleries in central London.
Unlike the nearby, constantly-rammed Photographer’s Gallery, this free, small gallery almost always has enough space to let you take in the work properly, and some of the work can be outstanding.
To be honest, I thought the theme for this one was rather weak, although that didn’t detract from the enjoyment of seeing some of the great work on offer.
Gathered under the banner, “Big Is Beautiful,” the only unifying element of the exhibition was that the photos were printed on a large scale. And that’s it.
So a striking modern colour picture of a diving polar bear can be found next to photos of the Eiffel Tower under construction next to archive images by Herbert Ponting of the 1911 Scott Expedition of Antarctica.
It’s all a little bit bewildering but – hey! – it’s a free exhibition!
