Emerging through the mist of a chilly autumnal morning can be seen 60163 Tornado, a LNER Peppercorn Class A1 steam locomotive, which entered service in 2008.
The first locomotive built in the United Kingdom since Evening Star in 1960, Tornado was built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, a charitable trust founded in 1990.
The engine is theoretically capable of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), and it is hoped that it will gain permission in the future to run at 90 miles per hour (140 km/h), which will make it the fastest steam locomotive on the British main line.
Passing the site of the abandoned East Brixton railway station.
You mayknow, you may not, but this locomotive was on Top Gear when they raced to Edinburgh. May in a Jaguar, Hammond on a motor-bike and Clarkson on the footplatet of Tornado. At one point the loco suffered fronm wheel slip and Clarkson, absolutely astonished, turned to the camera and said ‘Wheelslip…AT 70 MILES AN HOUR!’.
BTW you do seem to have an excellent perch for these photos.
