Tottenham Court Road tube station has been closed for construction work for what seems like an eternity, but – after one last weekend closure – it will be reopening on Monday 28th November. Huzzah!
The station closed in April 2011 and since then over 100 people have been beavering away underground to complete the works.
This involved removing 800 tonnes of cast iron segments from the tunnel lining and installing over 1,000 tonnes of the new steel tunnel sections.
Work at the station won’t be completed until 2016, with construction still underway to increase capacity, extend the size of the ticket hall by nearly six times, introduce step free access from street to platform, provide four new or modernised entrances, construct new escalators and improve interchanges between platforms.
And then there’s the matter of connecting with the new Crossrail ticket hall at Dean Street.
