Twenty Four Bricks at the National Museum Cardiff, Wales

I loved this simple and small exhibition at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.

Entitled, ‘Twenty Four Bricks,’ the display features a selection of Welsh-fired bricks arranged on six shelves.

With clays suitable for making bricks commonly found above or beneath coal seams, Wales became a natural place for brickworks to set up shop.

Most brick clays fire red, but local variations can produce a wide range of colours and textures.

Bricks are commonly inscribed with their maker’s name or the place of origin, making for some distinctive designs that reflect local character.
