This sizeable, but peaceful, protest was seen progressing down Oxford Street yesterday afternoon. I grabbed a few photos as it passed by:
The inminds website explained the background to the march:
On the anniversary of the assault on Gaza 2014, please join us on Sunday 3rd July for the annual Al Quds Day demonstration.
Al Quds Day – the last Friday of Ramadan – is an international day of the oppressed when people from all backgrounds and beliefs, from across the world – from Nigeria to China, from Cuba to South Africa, from Canada to Indonesia, come together united in solidarity with Palestine. In London it will be commemorated on Sunday 3rd July.
There will be coaches coming from all the major cities. from as far apart as Glasgow to Newport, bringing thousands of people from across the country together united for Palestine.
We will assemble at Duchess Street (behind BBC Broadcasting House) at 3pm and march on the US Embassy (in Grosvenor Square) for a mass rally with some excellent speakers and Skype video messages from Palestine – Palestinian freedom fighter Leila Khaled and Palestinian former prisoner from Gaza.
In the 4th photo down one of the protesters is holding a hand-written sign saying “Learn the truth about the Zionists http://www.DavidDuke.com”
I though the said David Duke was formerly (maybe still is) a Grand Master of the Ku Klux Klan?
Certainly his website – as on the poster – is less to do with Israel and Zionism than what might be called “white rights”. “Dr” Duke also has an article there saying that a Brexit vote is a vote against the New World Order – so you see where they are coming from.
Personally I always like to ruminate on the full implications of what is on my placards.
There’s some discussion about this on the forums – no wonder that bystander was asking the woman WTF was doing holding up an advert for racist Duke’s website! http://www.urban75.net/forums/threads/photos-united-for-palestine-anti-israel-protest-on-oxford-street-london.345392/
