Ever since the demise of the Photographers Gallery, I’ve been looking out for new cafes in central London. Yumchaa is probably still my favourite, but this small cafe by close to the hustle and bustle of Tottenham Court Road and Centre Point is worth a visit.
The interior is made up of well-worn wood panelling bedecked with quirky photos and postcards from a bygone age (any cafe with photos of Ena Sharples, Arthur Lowe and Leslie Phillips is alright by me).
The coffee certainly delivered, with the bijou cafe serving up the mighty Monmouth coffee brand, along with a good selection of cakes (from Villandry and Clarke’s of Kensington) and foccacias, croissants, ciabattas and baguettes.
To the left as you come in is The Nook, an intimate space offering seating for six (at a push).
Service was speedy, although the girl serving wasn’t exactly the friendliest I’ve encountered. Maybe it was down to her limited English skills, but the interaction could best be described as ‘business-like.’
That aside, I liked this cafe – it’s unpretentious, there was a nice supply of newspapers on hand to flick through and the cake and coffee were excellent. Recommended.
