Despite a long-running campaign of opposition from local traders, work has started on a new ice rink in Brixton, located on the site of the old Pope’s Road car park.
The 56m x 26m rink is set to open in January 2012, and for two and a half years will serve as the temporary home of Streatham’s ice skating and ice hockey teams while Tesco’s controversial Hub project is being built .

Here’s how the site looked like back in December 2010 from a similar vantage point as the photo above. It sure is grim, eh?
Although it was undeniably useful, the car park was an exceptionally ugly piece of bleak modern architecture.
