Brixton: out of town pubs/bars
It takes a lot for us to venture out of Brixton for a beer, but here's a selection for those of you with a roaming spirit:
BAR LORCA 68 Clapham Manor Street, Clapham, SW4
Spanish Tapas bar popular with locals. Beers are a bit expensive but the atmosphere's pretty friendly.
BREAD & ROSES 100, Clapham Park Road,SW4
The original home of the Workers' Beer Company, this friendly, down to earth, Nu-Labour-style working men's pub serves up a reasonable selection of beer and food.

THE CAMBRIA 40, Kemerton Rd, London, SE5
Tastefully decorated, quiet, spacious local boozer tucked away behind Loughborough Junction. Not always the friendliest service. But does do food including a good Sunday Lunch all day. And you're pretty much guaranteed a seat. Pool table.

CUBANA 48 Lower Marsh, Waterloo SE1 Despite the dubious Che Guervara imagery, there's no denying Cubana is
a lively, Cuban-themed bar/restaurant serving great food and some thundering cocktails.

FUNKY MONKEY Artichoke Place, Camberwell.
Popular bar for loafing students from the the nearby Camberwell School of Art. The cheap-ish beer and DJs make this is a good venue for a mighty piss up. Open till 12 in the week, 2am Thu-Sat
HALF MOON, 10 Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill, SE24 9HU
Originally built as a hotel in 1896, the Half Moon it stuffed full of original Victorian features with a beautiful wooden interior, engraved mirrored walls, and an intimate snug bar.
The function room at the back - which once hosted The Police, Van Morrison and U2 - is a great friendly venue too.

HOLY DRINKER 59 Nortcote Rd, Clapham Junction, SW11 New, friendly bar with a good reputation for beer and music, although the 11pm closing may put some drinkers off.

Perilously close to Clapham, the spacious 100 Pub serves up an impressive list of cocktails and a full food menu with an upstairs seating area and a courtyard.

Mock Tudor extravaganza with some pretty good comedy nights.
PRINCE REGENT Dulwich Rd (opp Brixton Lido) SE24
Handy for a post Brockwell Park festie quaff in the summer, this old boozer has recently had a full-on refurbishment with prices being hiked up accordingly.
RAILWAY TAVERN Station Rise SE27 9BW Conveniently situated right next to Tulse Hull BR station, this friendly, open-plan, sofa-tastic pub is well worth a visit. There's comedy nights and occasional live gigs upstairs too. It's a fabulous local.

Stranded betwixt trendy Clapham and the arse end of Brixton, this late bar (2am M-S, 1am Sun) has gained a good reputation for decent beers, cocktails and DJs. (Apr 2008: We think it may have closed now)

Formerly The Pacific, and then the Babushka, this loud and bustling bar features a small dance floor surrounded by the usual comfy sofas. Choose your nights carefully though as the clientele can vary wildly over the week!

With completely barmy Polynesian-themed decorations consisting of flashing tribal masks, totem Gods, bamboo seating and exotic cocktails, this lively Tiki lounge bar/club is a must-visit in Kennington.

SUN AND DOVES Coldharbour Lane, Camberwell, SE5
Although a little up-market for our tastes, this pleasantly laid back and attractive bar has a nice chilled out atmosphere with a small garden at the back. Good for a mid week quaff.
VAUXHALL TAVERN Vauxhall, SE1
On Saturday nights, this friendly gay/mixed bar hosts 'Ducky', one of the best nights to be found anywhere in London.
Featuring fun cabaret acts like Black Elvis and the 15-girl Actionettes, with wonderfully eclectic music (Kate Bush, Cure, Smiths, Pistols etc) this bar is definitely worth a visit. Don't be surprised if you find yourself grinning from ear to ear. Open till 2 weekends, £4 admission.
