urban75 walk club
A potted history of the urban75 Walk Club
Formed in April 2003, the urban75 walk club was the brainchild of urban75 bulletin board regulars, 'Stig' and 'Rollem' who came up with the idea of setting up monthly leisurely walks around London.
To keep things interesting, participants were requested to research the history of areas and building on proposed routes, ensuring that there was a ready supply of good pubs to keep spirits up on the walk.
The first walk, in April 2003 went from Temple, around the Inns of Court area and ended in Holborn and was such a success the monthly walk club was born. Here's where we've wandered since.
May 2003: Westminster Bridge and along the South Bank to London Bridge finished in the Market Porter watching the FA Cup Final.
June 2003: Highgate and Hampstead Heath focusing on the life and times of that old druggie Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
July 2003: Greenwich and Blackheath Cutty Sark, Observatory etc.
August 2003: Grand Union Canal Dalston to Camden. The research on this one concentrated on the magic mushroom shop in Camden, where we purchased supplies for Unsound that night.
September 2003: Herne Hill to Nunhead taking in the Velodrome, Dulwich Park, an amazing viewpoint and Nunhead Cemetery.
October 2003: A stroll in Epping Forest, we were originally going to go mushroom hunting, but it hadn't rained. Very enjoyable anyway.
November 2003: Holland Park, Kensington, Notting Hill. This walk actually took place in December! And there wasn't an actual December walk.
January 2004: Due to dodgy weather we went round the National Gallery and researched a few paintings
February 2004: Shoreditch area including a city farm.
March 2004: Epping Forest again. Our biggest turnout - 23 people! A wander round the woods, led by Griff, who managed to get lost. He later redeemed himself by inviting us all back to his place, where his wife had cooked loads of food for us.
April 2004: Chislehurst Caves and woods.
May 2004: Notting Hill gate and Grand Union canal picnic.
August 2004 The legendary Sloane Square/King's Road walk. Aborted and single-handedly destroyed by the actions of Red Jezza after 1/2 mile. Jezza did, however, manage to engage in direct class warfare against afew unsuspecting sloanes out shopping.
Sept 2004 Enfield Lock to Waltham Abbey and Cheshunt
Oct 2004 Another Epping epic with Griff - we finished where we were meant to start...and walked something close to a full circle
Jan 2005 Thames-side walk from Putney - Barnes - Hammersmith
Feb 2005 London Capital Ring, Woolwich to Falconwood
Feb 2005 Otford circular walk via Shoreham, Kent. Snow, slippery hills and fantastic pubs.
March 2005 A walk around Osterley Park, west London
March 2005 A walk around Hampstead Park, north London
April 2005 Epping Forest in the spring. We get lost with Griff again.
April 2005 Robertsbridge and Bodiam Castle
May 2005 Brighton and Devil's Dyke
Sept 2005 Hayes to Downe, Kent
[Note: the walks are still going ahead every month through 2006 - I just haven't had time to update this listing! Sorry!]
