London Nocturne 2012Annual bike races with Pros, Penny Farthings and folding bikesSmithfield market, central London [map], Saturday 9th June 2012 Running since 2007, the IG London Nocturne served up a feast of cycling-based racing and entertainment around the streets of Smithfield Market. The all-day free event features events like the Tern Folding Bike Race, Brooks Penny Farthing Race and Schwalbe Fixed Gear Longest Skid, as well as pro-riders thundering around the track until 10.30pm. There's loads going on in the area around the track too, with live music, trade stands, food and drinks promotions and more. And, of course, lots of drinking. Cyclists take a warm up spin around the circuit before the races start. The 'backstage' area in the middle of the circuit around Smithfield meat market. Entrants for the first folding bike race walk to the start line after leaving their bikes folded up ready for the race. And they're off! Racers have to run to their bikes, unfold them and then get pedaling! The second heat racers speed towards their steeds. The Leigh Day Kermesse race gets ready for the off. Keeping up the spirits of the Penny Farthing riders was the fabulous Mrs Mills Experience, who played rousing choruses of music hall tunes from the main stage as the bikes went by.
