Photographers' Gallery, London
Our favourite central London photo gallery and cafe, April 2007
*NOTE: the gallery has moved to a new location - see our photo report here.
Split into two adjacent sites on Great Newport Street (by Leicester Square), The Photographers' Gallery is a popular photo gallery space, notching up half a million visitors in 2004.
Established in 1971, the Gallery can claim to be the UK's first independent photographic gallery, and offers a regularly changing programme of exhibitions, projects and events.
The two exhibition spaces offer one of Europe's largest photographic bookshops, an excellent café and a Print Sales Gallery. All profits from the Gallery's enterprises go back in to supporting its public programme.
Admission is free, and we highly recommend the cakes!

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2006
The shortlist for the prize was on display at the gallery from 17 February - 23 April 2006.
Phil Collins: 'yeah... you, baby you', March 2006
We loved this video piece which showed singers from Istanbul singing along - and sometimes (ahem) 'interpreting' - songs from the Smiths.
Phil Collins: 'yeah... you, baby you', March 2006
The work was by Phil Collins (no relation to the ghastly ex-Genesis man) and the Gallery described it thus:
"Through choreographing seemingly playful scenarios, and inviting his subjects to actively participate in the creative process of representation, Collins's practice subtly challenges the documentary medium while retaining an incisive political and social dimension."
