We've put together a breathtakingly brilliant Brixton big night out, featuring the sensational anti-folkster SWEET BABOO, rockabilly-crazed garage rockers THE SPIVS plus the delightfully quirky BEARCRAFT, backed by the usual mob of DJs spinning great tunes until the wee small hours.
LIVE ACTS:
SWEET BABOO
We're chuffed to bring you the notorious and enigmatic Sweet Baboo - alter-ego of Cardiff-based Stephen Black - who sings songs about 'girls, drinking, sleeping and killing people.' Like a mash up of Jeffrey Lewis and John Cooper Clarke, Baboo's dark and sometimes viciously humorous songs are rooted in the finest traditions of Welsh psych-pop and country and folk.
"Sweet Baboo is one of the most genuinely original artists around. He is funny, emotional, smart and catchy, often in the same song." David Quantick
"An astonishing musician well worth investing time to listen to. His lyrical prowess, his beautifully dark songs and overall wonderfulness will make you want to clutch him to your bosom for a long while. One of Wales' finest." Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1
"Shambolic Anti-Folk Troupe... sweet-yet-dangerously-close-to-falling-apart take on country-soaked ballads" CultureDeluxe
Sweet Baboo feature
THE SPIVS
Currently recording with White Stripes producer Liam Watson, The Spivs are "one of the most talked about bands you've never heard off." Serving up a mixed up palette of oddball rock'n'roll, the high speed trio mash up the wild sounds of 50s rock'n'roll, 77 punk and 60s garage into a crazed ball of raw, high energy noise. Described as a collision between the early Cramps and The Scientists, The Spivs are a "must see for anyone, anywhere in the world, who thinks they dig real rock'n'roll music!"
"Wide-eyed rock'n'roll with a black heart of garage rock" HotGigsUK
BEARCRAFT
Any band mixing up, "spectral synths and electro beats with pagan, scientific, philosophical and English folk themes" and covering reference points like, "clairvoyance, altered states, barn owls, werewolves, castles, empty barns and retro physics theories" is worth a gig in our book, and we're loving the work of singer/musician/programmer/songwriter Dicky Moore.
Dicky also plays with Scritti Politti and Frank Sidebottom.
PLUS:
MULTIMEDIA
Original photos, old footage, pop 45 sleeves, and more.
PLUS A SPINNING PLATTER OF DJS!
We'll also have a full crew of hard-drinking Offline regulars throwing down a top selection of tunes, including:
EDITOR (urban75)
An ale-fuelled onslaught of ska, punk, rock'n'roll, big band, rockabilly, Mrs Mills & Liberace in a floor stomping package.
LANG & LOPEZ (The Actionettes)
A veritable platter splatter of 50s, 60s, Motown and more vital tunes from the Actionettes' very own Glamour Queens of Vintage Vinyl.
BOBBY BAUHAUS (charcoal soul) More mysterious than Robert Smith's eyeliner bag, Bobby gets dancefloors rocking with quirky, darkside indie-pop and kohl-smudging breakbeats.
