Musée D'Orsay
Inaugurated for the World Fair on July 14th, 1900, this superb building started life as a railway station (with adjacent hotel), boaasting a great hall 32 metres high, 40 metres wide and 138 metres long.
Once the head of the southwestern French railroad network, its platforms became too short for modern trains, and the building was threatened with demolition in 1975 before being classified as an Historical Monument a year later.
Now transformed into a museum, it hosts a world-class collection of paintings, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts and photography.
