Thames Barrier, Woolwich Opened in 1984, the Thames Barrier is the world's largest movable flood barrier, spanning a third of a mile across the Thames at Woolwich, South East London. Built to protect London from the effects of global warming and surge tides (which occur during/after severe meteorological conditions), by Sept 2005, the barrier has been raised 90 times.
