Tate Modern
Originally the Bankside Power Station, this 1947 construction was built by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (architect of Battersea Power Station, Liverpool Anglican cathedral and red telephone boxes).

It remained empty for nearly 20 years after closure in 1981 before being transformed into an excellent modern art gallery.
