Ludlow is named after a hero of the 1812 war, Lt. Augustus Ludlow, 2nd-in-command, U.S.S. Chesapeake, famous for being told by the dying Capt. Lawrence, 'Don't give up the ship.'

With Ludlow promptly killed after taking command, the crew, err, give up the ship.
