Fire escapes, SoHo

Under New York law, buildings with more than 2,500 square feet per floor (but less than 5,000 square feet per floor) require two staircases, with each additional 5,000 square feet per floor requiring an additional staircase.

As a result, buildings are covered in elaborate exterior fire escapes, often doubling up as extra space to store provisions or plants, or just a place to sit and watch the world go by.
