New York Public Library

The US doesn't have the same tradition of free museums and galleries like the UK, so this library's boast is especially welcome, "we have but one criterion for admission: curiosity".

The 1911 building, built on a two-block section of Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets, cost $9 million to complete and is visited and used annually by more than 10 million people.
