The 'Bargain District' bit is a recent promotional slogan for Orchard Street and the Lower East Side, dreamt up by a public relations firm The Lower East Side has a long-standing immigrant community with Eastern European Jews among its first settlers, followed by Asian and Latino immigrants. Although there's been a recent influx of groovy restaurants, shops, and trendy boutiques you can still pick up Jewish and Eastern European specialties such as kosher pickles, knishes and bialys.
