Brewer Street, Oxford This narrow thoroughfare is dominated by a surviving stretch of the old town wall. Gardner's Directory for the City of Oxford reports that a 'coach spring and axle-tree maker', Callis John Joseph, lived here in 1852. A blue plaque can be seen at at number one, commemorating the birthplace of Dorothy L Sayers, (June 13 1893), best known as the writer of crime mysteries investigated by her fictional hero Lord Peter Wimsey, and his butler, Bunter.
