Magic Garden, Philadelphia
Marvellous mosaic murals on South Street
(Photos/words © urban75, Dec 2006
The Magic Gardens of Philadelphia developed during the late 1960s when a group of young artists and entrepreneurs began renting derelict storefronts and apartments above the run-down stores around South Street, Philadelphia.
Although the South street corridor had been earmarked for demolition to make way for an expressway, artist Isaiah Zagar started building mosaics and mirrored murals along any wall and alleyway he could.
As the area's fortunes transformed and the inevitable process of yuppification started to seep down South Street, Zagar's home and work has come under increasing pressure.
