Ricoh GX200 High End Digital Compact
Ricoh's updated fully featured compact looks full of win.
(by editor for Digital Lifestyles, 24th June 07)
We almost dribbled with must-have camera love when we got our hands on Ricoh's high-end Caplio GX100 digital compact camera last year, and fresh moist patches have already appeared around the office with news of its successor, the GX200.
Physically, very little seems to have changed to the 25mm thin camera, but inside the GX200 has hiked the resolution up to 12 megapixels, with the company claiming "dramatic noise reduction" thanks to the addition of their new image processing engine, Smooth Imaging Engine III.
The GX200 retains the extremely useful optical zoom range covering a wideangle 24mm to short telephoto 72mm, with a larger 2.7-inch, 460,000 pixel HVGA LCD screen appearing on the back, with an optional articulated electronic viewfinder available.
The CCD shift method image stabiliser remains onboard, while a top shooting speed of 5fps and a continuous RAW mode allows continuous shooting for up to five raw format images.
What we loved about the Ricoh GX100 was its vast range of SLR-like manual controls and customised controls, and the GX200 builds on this functionality by adding two one-push mode change function buttons, letting users - for example - instantly jump from JPEG to RAW shooting or from colour to B&W. Sweet.
Inherited from Ricoh's high end fixed focal length GRD2 digi-compact is the electronic level which uses an an acceleration sensor to help keep the camera body horizontally or vertically - so you should be able to bid adieu to sloping seas and wobbly horizons.
A useful light intensity adjustment function (-2.0 EV to +2.0 EV) and '1st Curtain' and '2nd Curtain' options offer extra creative control for the flash, while the sensitivity range has been expanded to accommodate an ISO 64 setting.
The Ricoh GX200 will retails for £349.99, or £399 as a kit with the VF-1 electronic viewfinder.
