Windrush Square, Brixton

Built on what was the front garden of Effra House (building with painted windows in photo), Windrush Square was named to commemorate the arrival of West Indian immigrants on the Empire Windrush ship in 1948, many of whom settled in the Brixton area.

It is rumoured that the derelict Effra House (now known as Raleigh Hall) will be turned into a museum celebrating black culture and history.
