Brixton: lost pubs: BRADYS/RUSSELL HOTEL
189, Brixton Road and Caldwell Street, Brixton
Russell Hotel (Brady's) [Dec 2005]
This distinctive building, opened in 1906, stands on the corner of Brixton Road and Caldwell Street, Brixton North, and closed as recently as December, 2003.
The building was squatted after the pub closed, with an urban75 poster ('hatboy') remarking, "I went in there when it was squatted. The interior is beautiful - all marble and panelling. Probably all gone now."
In this December 2005 view, you can see work is still underway converting the pub into apartments. The ground floor may eventually return to being a pub.
Archive 1950s view when the pub was known as Brady's.
Nearly five years after closure the building remains empty [pic: September2008].
Brady's moved to another hotel, the Atlantic Hotel in Atlantic Road. Brixton, which, ironically, is now also closed and features in this guide.
