Then and Now: Brixton Road by Electric Avenue
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth
c 1930 Taken in the early 1930s before the building line was brought forward, this bustling scene was taken looking south along Brixton Road, near the junction with Electric Avenue. The row of shops includes a Furrier, a hairdresser, Arthur Collier 'Tools Cutter', Parkes Chemist and the original Barclays Bank and Prince of Wales pub.

May 2003 With new buildings springing up in front of the original scene, these were a tough set of pictures to line up, although the distant tower of St Matthews Church gave me some guidance. Dominating this modern scene is the tall 1930s frontage of Woolworths, with the replacement Barclays building covered in blue plastic next door.
