A festive trip to the south coast
(Photos/words © urban75, 23rd December 2006)
I've always enjoyed visiting Brighton - just a short hop away from London Victoria - so we headed south from Brixton to grab a lungful of wintry sea air and check out the sights.
The Sun struggles to break through the cloud cover.
Old fella in a natty hat walks along the promenade.
Keep off the groynes!
Fishermen wait for a catch on a cold and overcast day.
"Brighton Actually"
Detail from the Bedford Square Bandstand, an 1884 listed structure on the Lower Esplanade, currently undergoing restoration.
Business wasn't too brisk as the deserted Beach Hut cafe on the sea front.
The West Pier continues its sad decline, the victim of two extremely suspicious fires and a fierce winter storm in June 2004.
Close up of the burnt out, cast iron construction.
The pile of twisted metal sticking out of the sea in the foreground is the submerged remains of the Concert hall's dome.
Until the mysterious fires and subsequent collapse of the Concert Hall, restoration work had been underway on the West Pier, with this new extension offering access to the pier for visitors and workers.
The old entrance to the West Pier, which now leads nowhere. The plethora of barbed wire may have been erected in response to 'Operation Crusty' in 1995, which saw activists swimming out to the pier and squatting the structure to highlight homelessness in Brighton.
The old supporting beams for the West Pier.
Standing underneath the site of the original West Pier entrance.
Some local kids were using some buildings around the West Pier for Parkour training.
Looking to the Palace Pier along a near-deserted beach.
Statue with trumpet and shitting seagull.
The fabulously bonkers Royal Pavilion, created by John Nash between 1815 and 1822.
Another view of the Pavilion, which has recently enjoyed a £10 million restoration programme.
The Christmas decorations around the Lanes looked lovely!
The decorations on Kensington Gardens.
Brighton Bystander cafe by the station - a great place for grabbing a full (veggie) breakfast after a big night out!
