The Monument

Built in 1671-77 by Sir Christopher Wren (architect of St Paul's Cathedral) and Dr Robert Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire of London in 1666, this is the tallest free standing Doric column in the world.

Built from Portland stone, it stands 202ft (62m) high, which is the exact distance from the fire's source in a bakers shop in Pudding lane.
