Woolworths Building, Broadway Named the 'Cathedral of Commerce' upon completion in 1913, this 57-storey, neo-gothic landmark held the record for being the tallest building in the world until 1930. The architect, Cass Gilbert, liked the idea of mixing up traditional Gothic with modern skyscrapers and so created a Victorian-style extravaganza, complete with gargoyles, arches and flying buttresses. This view was taken from the Brooklyn Bridge approach. [November 2002] please donate! copyright/licensing |
