Lost Brixton: The Grand / Pullman
222 Railton Road, Herne Hill

Opened in 1932 and conveniently sited opposite Herne Hill railway station, the Grand changed its name to the Pullman in 1953 before throwing in the towel and closing for good in 1959.

The The London Project shows a cinema extant on the site in 1915, known as the Herne Hill Cinema.

Update Nov 2008:
The cinema became known as the Grand (re-opened 26th December 1932) after alterations by the fabulous architect George Coles ( Balham Odeon, Isleworth Odeon, Trocadero Elephant and castle etc) and became The Pullman in September 9th, 1953.

The cinema somehow managed to fit in 535 seats.

According to the 1954 Kine year book the lessee in 1954 was Pullman Cinema Ltd and their 1962 book recorded that the lessee that year was a John Gaul.

However, the AMBER VALLEY GAZETTEER of GREATER LONDON cinemas (from 1986) states that the cinema closed on 27th June 1959 with a double bill of 'The Way to the Stars' and Ealing Studios' fantastic 'The Ladykillers'.

After that it turned into a bingo hall before vanishing.
