West Pier, Brighton

Closed since 1975, the West Pier still clings on to life, although a major collapse in Dec 2002 has put restoration plans in serious jeopardy..

Built in 1866 by Eugenius Birch, the pier has hosted paddle steamer excursions, daring sea divers, military bands, a grand concert hall, plays, pantomimes and ballet before being converted to a funfair after the war.
