NYC: DOWNTOWN 2005 Jefferson Market Library Situated at 425 Sixth Avenue at West 10th St., this celebration of High Victorian Gothic in a neo-late Romanesque style comes complete with leaded glass, steeply roofs, gables, pinnacles, Venetian Gothic embellishments, and an unsual circular clock tower. The asymmetrical building employs polychromatic materials, with the 172-foot turret boasting clocks on all four sides. Built between 1873-77 and restored and adapted in 1967, the building was apparently based on Ludwig II of Bavaria's castle in Neuschwanstein. Serving as a courthouse, jail and market, the tower (which also doubled as a fire look out) was such a hit that it was voted as one of the 10 most beautiful buildings in the U.S. by a national poll of architects in 1885.
