City Hall Park, gas lamps

Evening view of the gas lit park in south Manhattan.

Excavations in 1999 during renovation of the park encountered human remains, reckoned to be from residents of New York's first almshouse.

Opened in 1736, the almshouse served as a homeless shelter, jail, and workhouse.
