Oxford Castle and Prison Now used by the council, this castellated building was in use as a prison until the late 1990s. In the background can be seen the 20m high, 80m wide Norman Castle Mound, constructed by William the Conqueror's knight Robert d'Oilly. Originally an earthen mound with a wooden palisade (in 1071), it was later rebuilt in stone. It is currently being restored. [Oct 2003] all photos©urban75 2003 |
