Hastings fishing port in photosA medieval fishing tradition continuesHastings seafront, England UK [map], Photo/article © urban75, October 2012 One of Britain's oldest fishing ports, boats have worked from the beach in front of the ancient town of Hastings for over a thousand years, and the tradition continues to today. Protected by the Hastings Fishermen's Protection Society, the fisherman have fought to be able to pursue their medieval right to carry on using that beach - known as the Stade - for ever, free of charge. More than 25 boats operate from the Stade, making it largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Britain. A view from the beach showing the East Hill Cliff Railway in the distance. Tractors are used to haul boats up onto the pebbled beach. Graffiti protesting against the Jerwood Gallery. Local fisherman strongly opposed the construction of this gallery on the Strade. > « back to Hastings photos Hastings pier » |
