Semaphores at Hastings stationSteam age survivors on the south coast main lineHastings railway station, England UK [map], Photo/article © urban75, July 2012 Despite being a major station on a main line in southern England, Hastings still sports a fine set of mechanical semaphore signals at the eastern end of its platforms. The colour light and semaphore signals in the Hastings station area are controlled by a Southern Region signal box that dates back to 1931. A scene that looks like it might have been taken half a century ago. This sweeping 1931 neo-Georgian booking hall was demolished in 2004 and replaced with a modernist glass building. There's no denying that the new building cuts a stylish dash, but I can't say it's a particularly pleasant place to tarry [Pic: wikipedia]. Looking back along the station. The western end of the platforms are controlled by colour light signals, which aren't as much fun. A last look at this fine pair of signals! In the distance you can just make out another signal gantry controlling access to the station. « back to Hastings photos Main photos home » |
